Sybaritic are a band from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Playing a very Slayer-influenced style of metal, influenced with what I interpret as more of a broad EuroMetal sound here. A proper production would really benefit this band; the kick drum sound here can be reproduced with the flat of your hand on a desk, seemingly disconnected from the rest of the sounds. Well executed effort here by a improving band. Not my cup of tea but it may be yours. Check it out.

including two exclusive and previously unreleased bonus tracks ("Seigneur de
l'obscurité" and "Serment de vengeance").
Belenos from France play excellent "folk" tinged black metal, each album a different atmosphere. Being personally familiar with "Errances Oniriques", I feel this is a great move by Belenos. The production of the first album never really bothered me in the slightest, but it's quite refreshing to hear the music with a all around far superior production. This is much like what Old Man's Child and Vader have been up too with re-recording the older material with their newer production values. Purists may see this is as not standing behind your earlier material, but to me that's ridiculous. To me these aren't 'reinventions' necessarily, but perhaps how the artist originally wished they could have presented their work. Enjoy!

A quite enjoyable release for this style. You'll be trying to sing along to words you don't understand and fill you with the appropriate visions of vikings, pride in the Nordic areas. We're breaking no new ground here but it's really quite pleasurable - in doses. The album tends to start strong drag in the middle and pick up a bit more towards the end. I usually end up listening to either the first half or second half of the album. After a few full listens, I tend now just to revisit for bits and pieces. If this style is all you listen too, then you may be really particular about some of the weaker elements of the album. Overall enjoyable.

Darkestrah are a personal favorite. Sit down, partake of intoxicant of choice and go for a ride. The follow up to the excellent "Epos" surpasses my expectations. Going for a similarly 'epic' vibe to "Epos", the album is a excellent aural journey. Hard to describe this album, I will ruminate upon it and report back as I digest. This album will take you on a journey. Strongly recommended.

I debated heavily whether to even put this on the blog, considering issues of international embarrassment. Then I realized everyone needs this album on their computers. Feeling low about yourself? Think you're confused and can't bring things together in an organized fashion? Temnojor's "Nordscapes" is here to save the day. The first song raises optimism with a clearly low-tech keyboard sound, but is altogether a decent ambient song bringing to mind the album title. It goes rapidly down hill into some completely bizarre mix of Electronica-101 dance beats, with terrible synth harmonies. The album continues in this fashion, bringing to mind skinheads with glowsticks, glow-in-the-dark suspenders & shoelaces, the works. No offense to skins or those of the NS persuasion, but holy fuck, the Russian Federation has a historic and glorious past and I hope future. Unite together and stop this embarrassing effort from continuing.
Essential listening.

When I first heard this, I knew nothing of the band. Very hooky guitar riffs jump out with a rock'n'roll swagger, excellent & distinguishable vocals, extremely organic sound. Where have I heard this strong, rusty voice, barking out tales of delerium and madness before? Oh, it's Nocturno Culto. Great to see him doing something outside the lines of Darkthrone. A statement to his excellence as a metal vocalist here, also handling live duties on rythym guitar. Great memorable, riffing out of Sarke here. The album wanders a bit in the later half, growing a bit more disjointed in how the songs flow together. Mixing black metal with a rockish vibe seems to be a new dare I say 'trend' recently, and one that grows a bit tiresome to me; that is not the case with this album. Highly recommended.

A new outfit out of Germany. Wintery themes of heritage seem to be their niche in the ever cluttered German black metal scene. I want to like this album more than I do. An ingredient seems to be missing in the dish to bring it all together and that would be the drum machine. This style of black metal is much better served with a human drummer, providing a less synthetic atmosphere. I'll be keeping an eye on this band in future.

Darzamat follows up on the "Transkarpatia" release with "Solfernus' Pass". Typically this is not my genre, however I enjoy Darzamat a good deal when the mood strkes. Very huge sound here on this album backed with an excellent production, which is required I think in this style of metal. Male & female vocals of playback and forth against each other, massive, rolling guitar riffs of an almost death metal, setting a good "evil" atmosphere. One of the better bands within this style and that doesn't change with this release; if it's not your bag, this album won't change your mind.

Houwitser seems to be taking a bit more of a American brutal death metal sound on this release, marking a bit of a shift from their previous sound. Two very good, intense songs from one of my favorite acts. While well played and produced, the songs lead us down a path to more familiar sounding, well-trodden-by-others territory. Somewhat personally disappointing.

Blutklinge's inital step into the black metal world, they seem to do so in an unremarkable fashion. Typical lo-fi production, wandering riffs of fuzz, vocals are obviously filled with some sort type of disgust for something. Admittedly, I haven't spent a whole lot of time with this one, but I'm confident I'm not missing out. Let me know if they deserve a second shot.

Required for diehard Amon Amarth fans. Re-master of "The Crusher" from 2001 with a live set comprising the entire album. Not my personal favorite Amon Amarth album, but was good to hear the songs sounding a bit better and live Amon Amarth is always a good thing.
